“A divided home“
A French philosopher once said every nation has the government it deserves. A fair statement to make seeing as government is the representation of its people. The average Nigerian is ego driven and this naturally reflects as the collective state of mind. Hence, leading by example in both our personal and public lives would be one good way to begin fixing our country. To get to the heart of the matter means to go inwards, because the biggest revolution is always within.
An open mind along with dedication to fairness, justice, equity, etc., are must haves when fate brings people from different cultural and religious backgrounds together. Good communication, awareness, maturity, tolerance, substance, and other positive traits enables peaceful co-habitation. Forcing unity as opposed to working on ways to build it is counterproductive. Sometimes there is unity in separation and at other times separation in unity.
It is human nature to err, but the willingness to apologize, change, and do the work to build or re-build trust is the deciding factor for true reconciliation. Though walking the path of healing is never easy, it is always necessary for individual wellbeing. Painful past experiences can rob us of present and future healthy meaningful relationships. Since it is impossible to change our history, we can either walk away for good or make this work, but we can’t be a divided home forever.
